I-VOLCAN - Geochemical-Thermal Dataset of Mt. Melbourne (Antarctica)
Multidisciplinary dataset acquired within the fumarolic ice caves of Mt. Melbourne (Aurora/MC1, MC3, and MC4). Includes continuous gas concentrations (CO2, H2O, CH4, etc.), soil CO2 fluxes, and high-resolution air/soil temperatures (depths of 20 cm and 60 cm). Data is used to track indicators of volcanic unrest in polar environments.

- Purpose
-
This resource was developed to establish a permanent geochemical and thermal monitoring system for volcanic risk mitigation at Mt. Melbourne and Mt. Rittmann while providing a continuous stream of high-quality data to advance multidisciplinary scientific research in volcanology, subsurface biology, and polar climate modeling.

Data Origin: Thermal data is recorded by autonomous standalone loggers (Tinytag Gemini for air; Hobo for soil at 20 cm and 60 cm depths). Geochemical data is acquired via an MG2 multiparametric station equipped with NDIR spectrometers for CO2 and electrochemical sensors for other species, alongside a static accumulation chamber prototype for soil CO2 fluxes. These instruments are installed inside protected fumarolic ice caves on Mt. Melbourne.
Acquisition and Transmission: The geochemical station is activated twice per day for approximately 30 minutes each time. Data is transmitted via a 900 MHz radio link using FreeWave ZumLink technology to a receiver at the Mario Zucchelli Station (MZS).
Data Transformation: At MZS, data is managed by a mini PC running Python-based software (DLServer) for buffering and local storage. Raw CO2 concentration variations measured in the accumulation chamber are processed using the RANSAC linear algorithm to calculate soil gas fluxes.
